I was a sophomore in high school, in health class, when my teacher started telling us about the best diet strategy ever. If you have read my personal story you can guess that I was tuned in very clear to see what secret Mr. S. was about to reveal. “Forget Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, even the miracle pill! This works and there are no side effects!” I was on the edge of my seat ready to hear the secret. “Eat fewer calories than you burn.”“That’s all?” I thought to myself as I sat there somewhat disappointed. It took a while for it to sink in but eventually I realized all those other programs were strategies to help reduce calorie intake or increase calorie burning. “This truly is the secret. I just need to eat fewer calories than I burn!”
Today I have a strategy that is just as good but it applies to trimming financial fat. Spend less than you earn! This is rule number one for me. I truly believe that no matter how much or how little you make, you can and should learn to spend less than you earn or in other words learn to live within your means. Once you understand and live this principle you will be well on your way to being financially fit. For the next few posts I will elaborate on this concept, but really it is just as simple as it sounds. We just make it out to be difficult.
